ホームズは、通風口があるはずだと前もって分かっていた理由を説明し始める。手がかりはヘレンの話の中にあった。さらにホームズは、屋敷で起きた出来事の日付に不思議な一致があると言い、ワトソンに考えさせる。夜はまだ深くない。
