寝室に忍び込んだホームズは、わずかな物音も計画の命取りになるとワトソンに耳打ちする。ここからは朝まで、暗い部屋で待つ番だ。ホームズは明かりをつけずに座ろうと言い、眠らぬようワトソンに念を押して、その支度にかかる。
