明かりを消した寝室で、ホームズはベッドの端に、ワトソンは椅子に座っている。拳銃はテーブルの上、杖とマッチはホームズの脇にある。眠るなと言われた夜の見張りが、いま始まったところだ。夜明けまでは、まだ何時間もある。
